Morphotheques
Morfotecas
At the beginning of the 1990s, as a response to the postmodern view that there are no other options than repetition, recombination and eclecticism, Driessens & Verstappen came up with the idea of automating artistic production. So the artists shifted their attention to using computers to develop artificial worlds with generative and self-organising properties. An important source of inspiration at this are the self-organising processes in our natural surroundings: the complex dynamics of all kinds of physical and chemical processes and the genetic-evolutionary system of organic life that continuously creates new and original forms. The artists observe these processes and record their diversity. Over the past years, this has led to several form collections, the so called Morphotheques. Each Morphotheque isshowing the stages of transition or the variations of forms that could be expressed within a specific generative process.
