Roots is a dreamlike screen that is based on an old persian myth of a bush that sprouts heads. ñ In a green and brownish fluid iron crystals grow steadily...Bubbles ascend like jellyfish. Branches break off and sink to the dark ground. They start to dissolve and become thick clouds hovering over the scene.
The sculpture works in a cyclic way. Two thirds of the cycle it is active: a crystal object is growing and stretching in space. This can be experienced in the sound. The sculpture composes itself. The following passive dreamphase makes up one third of the cycle. The object dissolves and falls apart while the tension slowly fades. The cycle of growth and decay restarts on the ruins of the decomposition. One cycle lasts around 3 hours.
Electricity is pulsed through the whole Sculpture. It is the key to the constant transformation. Growth changes the flow of the current. The modified flow changes the growth. Software and Hardware leave the next step to the material. The voltages at each wire are put through a resonance filter and thus transformed into sound. The 4/4 pulse results in a sublime rhythm.
Utopian ScreenThe installation is based on the model of a chemical computer by Gordon Pask in the early 1950s. It was open to the environment and it managed to grow to a configuration which was able to distinguish between different frequencies.Roots refers to a time when the big synthesis and simulation of image, sound, thinking and memory was soon to be started.

Raízes é um écran onírico baseado num mito persa da antiguidade, que menciona um arbusto do qual brotam cabeças. Num fluído verde e acastanhado crescem cristais de ferro a um ritmo constanteAs bolhas sobem como uma medusa. Os ramos partem-se e afundam-se no fundo escuro. Começam a dissolver-se e tornam-se nuvens espessas que vagueiam por cima de toda a cena.
Exhibition view
A escultura funciona de um modo cíclico. Em dois terços do ciclo está activa: um objecto de cristal está em crescimento e estende-se pelo espaço. A escultura forma-se a si própria. A fase passiva que se segue, a fase onírica, constitui a terceira parte do ciclo. O objecto dissolve-se e desmembra-se enquanto a tensão diminui vagarosamente. O ciclo de crescimento e de destruição recomeça sobre as ruínas da decomposição. Um ciclo dura aproximadamente 3 horas.
A electricidade percorre toda a escultura. É a chave da transformação constante. O crescimento muda o fluxo da corrente. O fluxo modificado transforma o crescimento. O software e o hardware deixam o passo seguinte ao material. As tensões em cada fio passam através de um filtro de ressonância e transformadas em som. A pulsação 4/4 resulta num ritmo sublime.
