Proteic Portrait
Retrato Proteico
The Proteic Portrait project attempts to explore the connectionbetween art and biology while adapting modern molecular biology techniques tothe production of works of art. The goal of the project is to create a self-portraitusing proteins as the art medium. The self-portrait is a sculpture representing themolecular structure of a protein, the mArta protein, whose sequence of aminoacids corresponds to the artists full name, in accordance with the scientificconvention for designating an amino acid. The project is also an experiment incollaboration among those involved in the production of the object for theexposition, namely the artist, scientists in the relevant laboratories, thecommissioner and the museum. Consequently, there is a search for processesthrough which the alliance between art and science can lead to progress in both areas.

O projecto Retrato Proteico pretende explorar a intersecção entre arte e biologia mediante a adaptação de técnicas modernas de biologia molecular para a produção de obras de arte. O objectivo do projecto consiste em criar um auto-retrato utilizando proteínas como meio artístico. O auto-retrato é uma escultura que representa a estrutura molecular de una proteína, a proteína mArta, cuja sequência de aminoácidos corresponde ao nome completo da artista, segundo o convénio científico de designação dos aminoácidos. O projecto constitui em si mesmo uma experiência de colaboração entre a artista e os cientistas dos laboratórios implicados. Deste modo empreende-se uma busca de processos através dos quais a colaboração entre arte e ciência conflui para o desenvolvimento de ambos os campos.
